Just Jaeckin

France · 1968–1990

Just Jaeckin (1940–2022) was a French photographer, fashion illustrator and film director whose work became closely associated with the emergence of sophisticated European erotic cinema during the 1970s. Before entering filmmaking, he established a successful career in fashion photography, developing a highly stylised visual language characterised by elegant composition, soft lighting and carefully constructed imagery. He achieved international recognition with Emmanuelle (1974), a commercial and cultural phenomenon that redefined erotic cinema for mainstream audiences. The following year he directed Story of O, adapting Pauline Réage's celebrated novel into a visually distinctive film that prioritised atmosphere, symbolism and aesthetic refinement over explicit psychological analysis. Although his filmography remained relatively small, Just Jaeckin became one of the defining visual stylists of European erotic cinema, influencing subsequent filmmakers, photographers and popular representations of eroticism throughout the late twentieth century.
