Pauline Réage was the literary pseudonym under which the French novel Histoire d'O was first published in 1954. For decades the author's identity remained one of the greatest mysteries in modern French literature, giving rise to widespread speculation regarding the novel's origins and authorship. In 1994 it was publicly confirmed that Pauline Réage was the pen name of Dominique Aury, an accomplished editor, translator and literary critic closely associated with the prestigious Nouvelle Revue Française. The revelation transformed scholarly understanding of the novel, highlighting its origins within the French literary establishment rather than the underground erotic press. Although only a single novel was published under the Pauline Réage name, Story of O became one of the most influential works of erotic literature of the twentieth century, shaping literary, artistic and cultural discussions surrounding authority, submission, desire and personal identity for generations. Anne Desclos (1907–1998), better known professionally as Dominique Aury, was a French editor, translator, journalist and literary critic whose career was closely connected with the Nouvelle Revue Française and the publishing house Gallimard. She translated numerous English-language authors into French and became one of the most respected literary editors of her generation. Her authorship of Story of O remained secret for approximately forty years. During that period, the novel became an international literary phenomenon while the identity of Pauline Réage inspired extensive speculation among critics, publishers and readers. Following the public confirmation of her authorship in the 1990s, Dominique Aury came to be recognised not only as an influential editor but also as the creator of one of the most debated novels in twentieth-century French literature.
