Sébastien Japrisot

France · 1953–2003

Sébastien Japrisot (1931–2003), born Jean-Baptiste Rossi, was a French novelist, translator and screenwriter renowned for psychologically complex crime fiction and literary adaptations. His works frequently explored ambiguity, memory, obsession and hidden motivations, earning him recognition as one of France's leading writers of suspense. For Story of O, Japrisot adapted Pauline Réage's novel into a screenplay that translated its symbolic narrative into cinematic form. While necessarily simplifying aspects of the original work, his screenplay retained many of its central themes concerning authority, devotion and identity. His contribution helped shape one of the most recognisable literary adaptations within European erotic cinema.
