Stuart Urban is a British filmmaker, screenwriter and producer whose work frequently combines social commentary with satire, exploring themes of identity, censorship, prejudice and political hypocrisy. Throughout his career he has demonstrated a particular interest in communities positioned outside mainstream social norms, approaching controversial subjects with humour while encouraging critical reflection. His films often challenge conventional assumptions by placing ordinary individuals within unfamiliar social environments, allowing audiences to question their own preconceptions alongside those of the protagonists. With Preaching to the Perverted, Urban created one of the earliest commercially distributed British films to portray the BDSM community from an internal perspective. While adopting the structure of a romantic comedy, the film simultaneously critiques moral panic, sensationalism and public misunderstanding surrounding consensual adult relationships.
