Andy Campbell is an American art historian, critic, curator, and scholar whose research focuses on Leather history, queer visual culture, archival studies, and contemporary art. He is Associate Professor of Critical Studies at the USC Roski School of Art and Design, where his work examines how communities construct meaning through visual and material culture. His publications explore the intersections of sexuality, archives, art history, and cultural memory. He is the author of Bound Together: Leather, Sex, Archives, and Contemporary Art and Queer X Design: 50 Years of Signs, Symbols, Banners, Logos, and Graphic Art of LGBTQ, and has also edited and contributed to numerous publications on contemporary art, queer history, and visual culture. In Bound Together, Campbell brings together archival theory, art history, queer studies, and Leather history to examine how archives actively shape the historical memory of Leather communities. Rather than presenting a conventional historical narrative, he demonstrates that preservation itself is a cultural practice through which communities transmit identity, knowledge, and collective memory across generations. His work has become one of the most important contemporary scholarly contributions to the preservation and interpretation of Leather cultural heritage.
