Jack Morin (1947–2013) was an American clinical psychologist, sex therapist, researcher, and one of the most influential thinkers in modern erotic psychology. Throughout his career he dedicated himself to understanding the psychological foundations of sexual desire, moving beyond traditional medical and behavioural models to explore the emotional, symbolic, and developmental processes that shape erotic life. Drawing upon decades of clinical practice and qualitative research, Morin developed several original concepts—including the Erotic Equation, the Four Cornerstones of Eroticism, and the Core Erotic Theme—which remain among the most influential theoretical models in contemporary sexology. His work emphasised that erotic desire is neither irrational nor random, but emerges through the interaction between personal history, emotional meaning, fantasy, intimacy, and psychological development. Unlike many authors associated with BDSM literature, Morin did not write specifically about power exchange or Leather culture. Instead, he investigated universal mechanisms of human eroticism that apply across sexual orientations, identities, and relationship structures. His theories have consequently been adopted by therapists, educators, researchers, and practitioners from many different communities, including the Leather and BDSM world.
