John D. Weal, widely known within the Leather community as Master John, is an American Leather author, educator, historian, and protocol scholar whose work has focused on documenting and preserving the traditions of the American Old Guard. Drawing upon more than five decades of personal involvement in Leather culture, he sought to record ceremonies, rituals, etiquette, hierarchy, and protocol that had historically been transmitted through mentorship rather than formal publication. Unlike many Leather authors who concentrate on relationship dynamics or BDSM techniques, Weal devoted his work to preserving the cultural memory of the community itself. His writings combine personal experience, historical reflection, and documentary preservation, acknowledging that the traditions he describes represent the particular Old Guard lineage through which he was trained rather than a universally accepted historical standard. His best-known work, The Leatherman's Protocol Handbook, has become one of the principal documentary references on Old Guard protocol and ceremonial practice. By transforming decades of oral tradition into a permanent written record, Weal made an important contribution to the preservation of Leather cultural heritage and to the study of twentieth-century American Leather history.
