Trevor H. Jacques (1956–2021) was a British-born Canadian author, publisher, researcher, educator, and community activist whose work significantly influenced the development of modern BDSM education and harm reduction. After studying Physics at Imperial College London, he emigrated to Canada in 1981, where he combined a successful career in information technology with extensive involvement in the Leather and BDSM communities. In 1991, Jacques co-founded Toronto's Safer SM Education Project in collaboration with medical professionals and experienced community educators. The initiative, supported by the AIDS Committee of Toronto, developed seminars, educational materials, and safer sex resources that would later form the basis of On the Safe Edge: A Manual for SM Play. Through this work, he became one of the leading advocates for informed consent, practical safety, and evidence-based BDSM education in North America. Beyond On the Safe Edge, Jacques authored Alternate Sources, edited several Canadian LGBTQ publications, published educational resources on safer kinky sex, lectured internationally on BDSM research and sexual health, and served as an expert witness in legal cases involving consensual BDSM. His contributions were recognised through multiple community awards, including honours from the Pantheon of Leather and the Leather Archives & Museum. His work consistently sought to bridge community experience, scientific understanding, and public education, leaving a lasting influence on the evolution of modern BDSM literature and safety education.
