Barbet Schroeder

France, Switzerland · from 1963

Barbet Schroeder (born 1941) is a Franco-Swiss filmmaker, producer and screenwriter whose career has encompassed documentary, fiction and international cinema. As one of the founding figures associated with Les Films du Losange alongside Éric Rohmer, Schroeder developed a body of work characterised by curiosity toward unconventional social worlds and psychologically complex human relationships. Throughout his career he has directed films ranging from intimate dramas to acclaimed documentaries and major Hollywood productions, including Reversal of Fortune (1990), which earned Academy Award nominations. His filmography consistently explores moral ambiguity, obsession and the tension between personal freedom and social convention. Maîtresse remains one of his most controversial and influential early works, combining dramatic fiction with documentary realism to portray the world of professional domination in a manner rarely attempted in commercial cinema.
