Radley Metzger (1929–2017) was an American filmmaker, screenwriter, producer and distributor whose work helped establish erotic cinema as a visually sophisticated form of adult filmmaking during the 1960s and 1970s. Beginning his career as a film editor and distributor of European productions in the United States, he developed a distinctive understanding of continental art cinema that would strongly influence his own direction. Metzger became known for films distinguished by elegant locations, carefully composed cinematography, literary adaptations and an unusually refined treatment of erotic subject matter. Rather than approaching sexuality solely through spectacle, his work frequently examined desire, identity, social convention and the changing boundaries of intimate relationships. He directed The Image under his own name and adapted Catherine Robbe-Grillet's novel L'Image using the screenwriting pseudonym Jake Barnes. The film represents one of his most concentrated explorations of dominance, submission, ritual and erotic authority, translating the novel's structured relational dynamic into a deliberately stylised cinematic form. Metzger's broader body of work includes Camille 2000, The Lickerish Quartet, Score and The Opening of Misty Beethoven.
