Terminology

Female Dominance

also known as FemDom, Female Dominant

Tradition of consensual authority in which a woman holds the leadership role within a negotiated dynamic or relationship.

Definition

Female Dominance describes any consensual authority arrangement in which a woman occupies the leadership or directive role. The term encompasses casual scene dynamics, ongoing relationships and lifestyle-integrated household arrangements. It is one of several established expressions of consensual authority and does not imply that female leadership is superior or exclusive; it simply identifies the gendered orientation of the authority in question.

Historical background

Female Dominance has been documented in Western consensual authority communities for well over a century, appearing in early erotic literature, professional practice and later in organised Lifestyle communities. Its modern expression developed alongside the broader BDSM, Leather and D/s communities during the twentieth century.

Discussion

Contemporary usage distinguishes between professional Female Dominance, scene-based FemDom and lifestyle Female-Led Relationships. Communities vary in the degree of formality and public visibility associated with the term.
