Symmetry describes the correspondence between the two halves of a tie in placement, tension and line. In many Japanese-influenced styles it is valued as a marker of care and craft.

Symmetry is not the only aesthetic; some traditions and teachers deliberately cultivate asymmetry for expressive effect.
