Traffic-Light System
also known as green yellow red, stoplight
A widely used safeword convention using the colours green, yellow and red.
Definition
The traffic-light system provides a shared vocabulary for real-time communication during a scene. Green signals that the activity may continue as planned. Yellow signals that the activity should slow, ease, or be checked in on. Red signals a full stop.
Its advantage is legibility: participants who have not negotiated a custom safeword can still communicate clearly. It is often combined with a non-verbal fallback for situations in which speech is restricted.
