The word Leather refers at once to a garment, a community, and a set of traditions. Its early modern form arose among post-war gay men in North America and Europe, and gave rise to lineages of mentorship, ceremonial practice, chosen family, and public gatherings such as bar nights, runs and title contests. Today Leather is practised across genders and orientations, and its traditions continue to shape wider BDSM culture.
