History

Historical Rope

A general term for the pre-modern Japanese rope traditions that inform contemporary practice.

Definition

Historical Rope refers collectively to the martial, administrative and ceremonial rope traditions of pre-modern Japan. Contemporary Shibari and Kinbaku draw on this heritage aesthetically and symbolically, though they are not direct continuations of it.

Discussion

Careful writers distinguish between historical rope, which was largely coercive and administrative, and modern rope, which is consensual and expressive.
