Torinawa
A term for the rope used in Japanese arresting arts, and by extension the practice itself.
Definition
Torinawa refers to the rope used by pre-modern Japanese officials to arrest and transport prisoners, and to the associated body of technique. It overlaps closely with Hojojutsu and is sometimes used as a synonym in historical writing.
Historical background
The practice was regulated in various periods, with rules governing rope colour, thickness and the forms permitted for particular ranks of offender.
