Police Rope

Rope techniques used by Japanese law-enforcement officials in pre-modern and early modern periods.

Definition

Police Rope is a Western descriptor for the arresting rope practices of Japanese constabulary, magistrates' officers and jailers. Distinct rope colours, thicknesses and forms were assigned to particular offences and stages of custody.

Historical background

The practices persisted in modified form into the Meiji era before being largely displaced by modern policing methods.
