Hojojutsu is the historical Japanese martial art concerned with the restraint of prisoners using rope. It comprised codified techniques for binding captives quickly, humanely by period standards, and in ways that communicated the captive's status, offence or destination through the visible form of the tie.

Hojojutsu developed within feudal Japan and was practised by samurai, police officials and jailers. Distinct schools evolved with their own vocabularies and conventions.

Contemporary Kinbaku is often described as culturally descended from Hojojutsu, but the two are distinct: Hojojutsu is a martial and administrative art, while Kinbaku is an erotic and aesthetic one.
