Intent describes the inward orientation with which rope is applied: what the Rope Top means to do, feel and communicate. In Japanese-influenced traditions, intent is considered inseparable from technique; the same tie performed with different intent is understood to be a different experience.

The concept resists precise definition and is often taught by example, apprenticeship and reflection rather than by rule.
