The Lexicon

The Lexicon preserves the language of the Lifestyle — its words, concepts and traditions. It records meaning; it never prescribes practice. Where usage varies between Houses or lineages, each is set down with equal respect.

Equipment

Synthetic Rope

Rope made from synthetic fibres such as nylon or polyester.

Definition

Synthetic Rope is rope constructed from man-made fibres. It behaves differently from natural fibre rope in weight, stretch, friction and feel, and while it is used in some rope practices, it is generally not the preferred material in Japanese-influenced traditions.

Discussion

Synthetic Rope has legitimate uses, particularly where cost, durability, or ease of washing are priorities; the preference for natural fibre in Japanese-influenced rope is aesthetic and tactile rather than absolute.
