The Ubar is, in the Gorean setting, a ruler exercising sovereign or exceptional authority. The role is often associated with wartime leadership or with the concentration of civic and military command in one person. Ubar is distinct from Administrator, which denotes ordinary civil magistracy.

The word has become one of the most recognisable in Gorean vocabulary and is sometimes borrowed in community practice as a title of leadership within households or groups.

Community use of the title varies widely. Some households reserve it for the head of the household; others treat it as strictly literary.
