'Handler' is used in petplay, ponyplay, primal and service contexts, each with distinct connotations. This article treats the general role; species- and community-specific usages appear in their own entries.

A Handler is a person who takes the complementary role opposite an animal-role participant, most commonly a Pup, Pony or other Pet. The Handler typically supervises the scene, negotiates and enforces limits, provides direction and aftercare, and holds a degree of consented authority appropriate to the dynamic. Handler responsibilities range from moment-to-moment guidance at events to ongoing care within a sustained relationship.

The term Handler entered common use through Puppy Play and Ponyplay communities, adapted from real-world working-animal language to describe the person on the human side of the leash.

Different communities use the word Handler with slightly different emphases. Some reserve it for a formal, ongoing role; others use it interchangeably with Owner, Trainer or simply Partner within animal-role contexts. Handler is not synonymous with Dominant, although the roles often overlap.
