Playfulness is the register of light, joyful, exploratory interaction that runs through much animal-role practice. It is a central quality of many Puppy, Kitten and companion-animal expressions, distinct from the more solemn registers of ceremony or long-term dynamics.

Animal-role communities have long recognised Playfulness as a core value alongside welfare, consent and craft.

Playfulness is not the only valid register within animal roles. Some dynamics are quiet, ceremonial or intense; Playfulness is one option among several.
